Between 1580 and 1763 the British, Spanish and French all colonized in North America in the pursuit of gold, god and glory. Although its important to keep in mind each of these countries had different ways of achieving their pursuits due to their countries different believes-this was especially apparent in the god or religious aspect.
Starting with the similar features of their imperial goals of gold.In this time period most countries believed in the economic policy of mercantilism. They believed their was only a finite amount of wealth in the world and the British, French and Spanish all wanted to most of it. They all believed the New World held opportunities to find valuable natural resource, like gold, to make quick profits of. Although the Spanish were the only ones some what successful at this. They were able to both gold and sliver mining. The French and British were less successful and had to turn to other resources to for their commercial incentive. Although they both part took in the fur trade and agriculture they both focused more on one than the other. The French used their strong connections with Native's to establish a strong fur trade. While the British focused on agriculture especially cash crop like tobacco and cotton to export back out to their country and others.
On the other hand the contrasting aspects they had in their imperial goals were religion and the way in which they colonized the North America. The Spanish and French had similar religious goals due to both of them having the same religious back ground, Catholic Jesuits. Both countries sent missionaries to convert natives through evangelism. But unlike those countries the British were seeking religious asylum. Many Christians were dissatisfied with the with the official religion of Britain. For example there were the Puritans, Separatists- Puritans with radical positions- and the Quakers-a Separatists sect. The Puritans in all their different forms were antagonized and looked to the new world for hope. Then moving on the the next contrasting point, the way in which each country colonized was different;even thought they were all trying to assert their dominance in the new world. Again the Spanish and French had similar concepts, they thought the best way to go about colonizing was to merge with the natives, through interracial marriage and adopting parts of the native's culture. The French for main years in the middle grounds greatly adept to making mutually beneficial relationships between themselves and the natives. This was partial to do to their acceptance to tribe culture, they honored the chief with respect, gifts and tribute. This made the Natives much more flexible enabling them to colonize the area with ease. The English again stood on it on with a completely different idea of transplantation. They wanted to set up a British society with in the New World in which they kept all natives and other cultures completely separate from themselves.
In hunt of gold, glory and god Britain, Spain and France all colonized the North America in different ways. Their different cultures caused them to differ in their pursuits in their imperial goals, making there presents in New World different.
